S. Niles Saxton
S. Niles Saxton, for many years a leading resident of Milford and one of its most respected citizens, died on Friday of last week of acute Bright's disease. Though he had been in failing health for some time, his final illness was of only about three weeks duration. The funeral services were held at his late home on Monday at 2 p.m. The Rev. N.B. Ripley of the Methodist Episcopal Church officiated and interment was made in Milford Cemetery.
The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Niles Saxton and was born in December 1843, in the town of Middlefield. He was a graduate of the Albany Normal School and for two years taught on Long Island, giving up his work on account of trouble with his eyes and returning to his home near Westville where for a time he was associated with his cousin the Hon. J. Newton, in the management of the village store. Further eye trouble led to retirement and for sixteen years he was ________ in ______ and coffee. ________ ______________ over a wide territory and was well-known throughout the country. Later he removed to Binghamton, where for eleven years he was successfully engaged in the boot and shoe business. In ________ he retired from active business and removed to Milford where had ever since been his home.
Mr. Saxton was twice married; his first wife, who survived but three years being Miss Maria Saxton of Westville. His second wife, who survives him, was Miss Hattie Sayre of Milford. He leaves also one son Sayre Saxton, of Baldwinsville, and one brother, James W. Saxton, of Westville. He was an official member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for many years, leader of the choir and for ten years superintendent of the Sunday School. He will be greatly missed in the community, of which he had so long been a member and in whose activities he had, despite the handicap of imperfect sight, taken so large a part.
