Charles was a native of Virgina, grandson of Reuben Calvert who fought in the Revolutionary War. He married Anna Murfin on 12 Sep 1823 in Scioto County, Ohio. Anna and Charles had one known child: Reuben Calvert. Reuben was a Corporal in Co B 2nd Ohio Cavalry during the Mexican War.

After the death of Anna, Charles married Sarah Scott (maiden name Scott, also sourced as Sarah Withrow) on 21 May 1829 in Highland County, Ohio. While living in Highland County, Ohio, Charles and Sarah had children Elizabeth (Folden), Leah (Folden), Charles, Hezekiah, and William. Daughters Margaret (Egloff) and Mary (Davis) were born in Shelby County, Indiana. Sarah died in 1844.

Charles married Elizabeth Folden on 12 Jan 1845 in Hancock County, Indiana. Seven children were born of this marriage, all dying in infancy but one. About 1851 George and Elizabeth moved to Fremont County, Iowa near Sidney. Daughters Nancy (Harmer) and Maria were born in Fremont County. Charles and Elizabeth moved to Mills County, Iowa, south of Glenwood in 1875, and lived with son George and wife Leah.

Charles died in this home in 1880 at the age of 77 years 7 months 21 days. Elizabeth died in 1915 at the age of 89 years 11 months.
