Joseph Shields, 83, of Wheat Ridge passed peacefully Dec. 31. He is survived by his wife, Leslie, 7 children, 10 grandchildren, 3 siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held Fri., Jan. 8, 4:30pm at Wheat Ridge Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be sent to Wheat Ridge Presbyterian Church or the American Stroke Association.

Joseph Shields Coffman, formerly of Milton-Freewater, passed away December 31, 2009 at his home in Wheatridge, Colorado; he was 83.
Memorial services were held Jan. 8th at his home church in Wheatridge. Memorial contributions can be made to Wheatridge Presbyterian Church, 9180 W. 38th Ave., Wheatridge, CO 80033, or the American Stroke Association.

Coffman was born to Floyd and Mildred Shields Coffman in Milton, Oregon. He graduated Mac-Hi in 1945 and married to Leslie Anne Collins November 1949. Coffman graduated Oregon State in 1956 with a B.S. in Geology and he continued his graduate studies at the University of Idaho. He was employed by U.S. Bureau of Mines in Spokane (14 years) and Denver (19 years) where he retired in 1994. His work took him all over the US, Canada, Europe, Mideast, Mexico, & S. America.

He is survived by his wife at the home; three sons: Damon of Portland, OR: Christopher of Bellevue, WA; Samuel of San Antonio, TX; four daughters: Miriam Cheney of Portland, OR; Rachel Thompson of Catherine Battaglia and Suzanne of Denver CO; there siblings: Robert of Orange, CA; Tom of Myrtle Point, OR; Norma Coe of College Place, WA and 10 grandchildren.

Joseph attended the University of Idaho and worked as a geologist with the U.S. Bureau of Mines to assess various commodities such as phosphate, manganese, oil, and gas. Limited list of publications below.
