John A. Barnhart, 87, of 135 E. Second St., died at 5:40 p.m Thursday, Feb. 16, shortly after being admitted to the Waynesboro Hospital. He had been in failing health since suffering a heart attack in November. Born near Greencastle, Nov. 25, 1896, he was a son of the late William E. and Ettie (Brandt) Barnhart. His early life was lived in the Clay Hill area. He and his wife, Mrs. Alice (Martin) Barnhart, were married in June, 1921, and had lived at the present residence for the past 52 years. As a young man he farmed and later worked at the Geiser Com­pany. Prior to his retirement in 1957, he was employed as a letter carrier by the Waynesboro Post Office for 33 years. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. In addition to his wife, he is sur­vived hy these children: Erston M. Barnhart, Carlisle; Donald J. Barnhart, Wellsville, Mrs. H. Darlene Smith, Waynesboro; Paul L. Barnhart, Sayre; and Mrs. Nancy C. Dale, Dallas, Texas, 15 grand­children, two great-grandchildren; and these sisters and brothers, Mrs. Mary Shew, Mrs. Grace Keller and Mrs. Ethel Lesher, all of Cham­bersburg, Elmer Barnhart, Frederick, Mrs. Ruth Hafer, Little Rock, Ark.; and Glen Barnhart, Hagerstown. Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Grove Funeral Home, with Pastor David Clark officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services Monday.
