Mrs. Alberta Langstraat, age 87, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, March 6, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, March 9, at 11:00am, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jonathan Opgenorth will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Capel Township Cemetery, near Middleburg. There will be a family prayer service on Thursday, at 9:45am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the funeral home.

Alberta Edna was born on May 26, 1918, in rural Orange City, the daughter of Albert and Jeanette (Grooters) Slothouber. She was raised on her family's farm near Middleburg. She graduated from the Northwestern Classical Academy and attended Northwestern College in Orange City. She then was a teacher in country schools between Orange City and Middleburg.

On June 10, 1941, she married William Langstraat, Jr., at Middleburg. They farmed near Middleburg, where she was a homemaker. Later, she became a nurse's aid at the Heritage House. Bill passed away on March 6, 1973, at Middleburg.

In the fall of 1973, Alberta moved into Orange City, where she was a waitress part-time. Later, she moved to the Pioneer Court and Pioneer Home in Orange City. In 2004, she became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City and in December of 2005, she transferred to the Heritage House.

Mrs. Langstraat was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's organizations and sang in the choir. In earlier years, she belonged to the Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg, where she was a Sunday school teacher and pianist.

She enjoyed doing handwork and loved music, especially accompanying groups on the piano.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Annetta Boone and Genevieve Mouw.

Memorials may be directed to Hope Haven in Rock Valley or Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon.
