Based on enlistment, his service would have included battles of New Madrid & Island # 10, Siege of Corinth, MS (Apr 2-May 30,1862)Battle of Iuka(Sep 19) where regiment won high honors by holding its ground against four times its numbers, making 3 charges with bayonet when all ammunition was exhausted. Out of 480 engaged, the 5th lost 220 killed and wounded. Battle of Corinth (Oct 3-5 62). Peter Alexander Carpenter was born in Newville, Richland, Co., Ohio the son of Daniel Carpenter and Sally Northway. His occupation before the war was as a surgeon. He married Mary Pierce Scarborough at Tipton, Ia. on Nov.17,1859. Appointed Assistant Surgeon for the 5th Iowa Infantry at Camp Warren, Burlington, Iowa on July 15,1861. He was promoted full surgeon on April 27,1862. He returned to the Regiment at Corinth,Ms. from a furlough at home in Iowa on the evening of Oct.23, 1862. He brought stockings and mittens for the men made by the ladies of Tipton, Ia.
Died at Timnath, Larimer Co., Colo. on July 28,1871 (per his brother Leroy writing in an Aug.5,1871 letter).
