Last Veteran of
Civil War Dies
Only an hour before another year was to dawn, death Wednesday night took Alexander Columbus Bowen, the only surviving veteran of the Civil War in Knox County.
Better Known through a long generation as "Zan" Bowen, he had been ill for 14 months, and had been living in the home of his daughter, Mrs Grace McClung, 809 Upper Eleventh Street here. He was 98 years old when he died.
Besides being Know County's only Civil War Veteran, he was the last member of his regiment, the 51st Indiana Infantry, to succumb.
Mr Bowen was born August 23, 1843, near, Carlisle, Ind, a son of Mrs and Mrs James Bowen. Through most of his long life he was a farmer and lived near Freelandville.
One of the high spots of his life came in 1938 when he attended the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg as a guest of the government. He made the trip to the famous battlefield in company with C L Brooks of Freelandville, an old friend.
For the last nine years Mr Bowen has lived in retirement with his daughter here. He retained his membership in the Christian church in Freelandville.
Surviving include the daughter, three sons, Eliza A Bowen of Los Angeles, Calif, and Arthur and Carl Bowen, both of Freelandville, seven grandchildren, Harold Bowen, Mrs Ruth Wills, Mrs Nolan Salyards, Bryon McClung, Arthur H McClung, Mayfair McClung, and Nellie McClung, and two great-grandchildren, Areta June McClung and Billy Wills.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Freelandville Christian church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'ckicj. Burial in the adjacent cemetery.
The body will be In state at the Brockman funeral home until 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon when brief services will be conducted before departing for Freelandville for continued services.
