Dewey Chapman, former sheriff
Dewey R. Chapman, 82-year-old resident of Brookfield, died Friday night at Pershing Memorial Hospital in Brookfield.
He was born Feb 24, 1898, near Eversonville, son of Rice W. Chapman and Mary Ellen Keller Chapman. On April 13, 1921, he married Elsie Mae Paul. She died June 10, 1974. On Feb 11 1976, he married Sarah Coram.
Survivors are the wife, Sarah , of the home; a daughter Mrs. John (Reva) Turner, Brookfield; a son, Dale Chapman, Chillicothe; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Bob (Vinita) Cochran, Milan, and Mrs. Phillip (Carolee) Young, Winigan; a stepson James Crist, Monett; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Holser, Chillicothe, and Mrs. Abi Palmer, Meadville, and two brohters, Carl and Lewis Chapman, both of Wheeling.
Mr. Chapman had been a farmer and served served [sic] two terms as Linn County sheriff, retiring as sheriff in 1964.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Park Baptist Church in Brookfield with the Rev. Kenneth Kelly officiating, assisted by the Rev. Alan Thompson. Soloist William E. Crouse sang "How Great Thou Art" and "My Lord is REal," accompanied by organist Janet Lain.
Burial was in Park Lawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of the Wright Funeral Home in Meadville. pallbearers were Dane Chapman, Johnny Turner, Floyd Corbin, Jerry Brinkley, Jim Crist, and Steve Young. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Stewart, Lance McCormick, Clifford Monroe, Glen Wilson, Hubert Wilson, Lee Wendt, and George Elliott.
