Oscar Newton Wilmington, 1516 Brookside avenue, 98-year-old veteran of the Civil War . . . died last night of injuries suffered in a week ago. His death left only a few in the dwindling ranks of the G.A.R. in Indiana. Mr. Wilmington, one of the active members of the Grand Army of the Republic, was the only G.A.R. veteran at the 63rd state G.A.R. encampment June 23, 1943. He was elected honorary president of the Federated Patriotic Societies of the state in 1934. He was the last survivor of his regiment, the 57th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, which served in the first battle of Shiloh. Mr. Wilmington enlisted in the army after several attempts at the age of 16 and later became a lieutenant at the age of 19. He served 31 years in the postal service in Indianapolis after the war and was superintendent of the registry division several years before his retirement. He was born near Lawrence, and had lived here all his life, having spent 55 years at the Brookside avenue address. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in the Flanner & Buchanan mortuary, 25 West Fall Creek parkway, by the Rev. A. C. Brooks, pastor of the Third Christian Church. Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery. Survivors are a son, Elmer E. Wilmington, with whom he lived; a daughter, Mrs. James A. Daugherty, Los Angeles, Cal.; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. Mr. Wilmington's wife, Mrs. Christina Wilmington, died ten years ago. [Indianapolis Star, April 8, 1944].
