Charles A. Scudder, born in Jefferson County, Indiana on August 8, 1916 to Earl and Laura Lee Scudder, Charles died in Boulder, Colorado on Monday, March 14, 2005. Mr. Scudder spent his life in dedicated service to his family, community, and his country. He was a teacher and principal for 35 years in the Indianapolis Public Schools. Mr. Scudder was a graduate of Central Normal College. He received his master's degree from Butler University. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserves for 27 years, retiring in 1968. He served his country during World War II in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno, and was aboard LCT 431 at Dog Red on the third wave at Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He then served aboard the U.S.S. Dionysus in the Pacific Theater and was in Tokyo Bay when the treaty was signed with Japan in 1945. His highest rank was Commander. On August 4, 1946 he married the love of his life, Mabel Elizabeth Stout Scudder. Together they raised their three children. Mr. Scudder was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church and later joined Northside Baptist Church. In addition, he was a member of the Indianapolis Education Association, the State Principals' Association, and a 50 - year member of the Morgan County Masonic Lodge. He was the widower of Mabel E. Scudder. Survivors include: daughter, Sharon Nehls and husband Richard of Boulder, Colorado; son, Gary Scudder and his wife Martha of Brentwood, Tennessee; daughter, Shirlene Burroughs and husband Scott of Dripping Springs, Texas; and six grandchildren: Christopher Charles Nehls, Jeffrey Edward Nehls, Sarah Margaret (Scudder) Morrison and husband Chris, David Rogers Scudder, Clinton James Burroughs, and Robert Scott Burroughs.
