The son of Isaac & Margaret (Eberly) Brenneman, in 1860 he was living with his prosperous farming family in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 4" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg January 19, 1864, and mustered into federal service there January 20 as a private with Co. A, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), rising to the rank of sergeant. He honorably discharged by general order June 28, 1865, at Cloud's Mills, Virginia.
By no later than the 1880s, he was living in Marion County, Indiana, where he married Sarah Jane Vickery, fathering Mary E. (b. 08/01/78), Bessie J. (b. 07/21/80), Harry E. (b. 05/02/82), Goldie A. (b. 10/20/84), and Walter (b. @1886).
