GARNER, NC – Nelda Miller Rand, 87, passed away Monday at Rex Hospital surrounded by her devoted family and her pastor. Born in Monroe County, KY, she was the second child of William McKinley and Novella Bowman Miller. On her 18th birthday, she traveled by bus to Raleigh to live with her aunt and uncle, William Lyndon and Ibbie Bowman Mayer and attend Hardbarger's Business School. Upon finishing school, she began work with the Federal Government. In January, 1942, she met Joseph Smith Rand. They were married on June 6, 1942.
For 17 years, following the birth of her children, Nelda was a stay-at-home mom, then returned to State Government, working with the State Retirement System until her own retirement in 1985.
Since 1953, she was a devoted and active member of Garner United Methodist Church and leaves a multitude of friends there.
A celebration of Nelda's life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, at Garner United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh, NC.
She is survived by her sons, Michael Rand and wife, Katherine, of South Boston, Joseph Ripley Rand and wife, Cheryl, of Garner; her daughter, Betty Rand Starling and husband, Robert, of Garner; granddaughters, Emily and Sarah Rand of Arlington; grandsons, Benjamin Rand of South Boston, and Jonathan and Parker Rand of Garner; sisters, Thelma Emmert, Katherine Walden and husband, William, of Tompkinsville, KY and Carol Ramsey and husband, Ron, of Glasgow, KY; brother, Isaac Miller and wife, Shirley, of Tompkinsville, KY; grand-dogs, Molly and Truman Starling and Dusty Rand; grand-cat, Margaret Starling and great-grand-dog, Bubba Rand.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Joe Rand; her infant son, Jody and her brother, William Denton Miller.
Visitation was held 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
