| Birth: | Aug. 23, 1820 | | Death: | Mar. 13, 1889 | Clipper Captain. Born Freeman Doane Hatch in Eastham, Massachusetts, the son of Freeman and Abigail Mayo Hatch. A mariner from an early age, he served as captain of the Clipper, Northern Light. In February of 1853 Northern Light, and two other Clippers; Contest and Trade Wind, both of which were New York built ships, were outfitting to sail from San Francisco to New England at the same time. A bet was made and a head-to-head clipper ship race from San Francisco to to Boston was agreed upon. Hatch took Northern Light out of San Francisco on March 13, 1853; 38 days later he had rounded Cape Horn, by day 52 he was off Rio de Janeiro. He stood off Boston Light on May 29, 1853. Northern Light reached Boston in the record time of 76 days. Hatch's rivals arrived within 79 days and 84 days respectively. Hatch's record run still stands, no other sailing vessel has yet been able to beat his time between San Francisco and Boston via Cape Horn.
