Sportscaster. A pioneering figure in the sports industry, his television program "The George Michael Sports Machine", which ran from 1980 to 2007 (becoming nationally-syndicated in 1984), was an innovative force with its usage of game highlights and interviews. Born George Michael Gimpel, he began his career in radio during the early 1960s as a promoter for Motown Records while attending St. Louis University. In 1966, he joined WFIL in Philadelphia as music director and disc jockey remaining there until 1974. He helped them become one of the top stations in the nation before moving to WABC in New York. Michael did play-by-play commentary for the New York Islanders prior to his relocation to Washington, D.C. in 1980, where he established himself as a popular local TV sportscaster. He earned the reputation as being one of the most energetic, knowledgeable and respected journalist in the industry. In addition to the "Sports Machine", he hosted the programs "Redskins Report" and "Full Court Press". (bio by: C.S.)
