Father O'Donnell Dies At South Bend After Illness Lasting A Year
Was Most Distinguished Churchman Kokomo Ever Produced-Boyhood Was Spent Here and Here He Began His Works for Holy Orders-Had Been President of Notre Dame University Last Six Years-Distinguished as Priest, Post, Orator and Educator-Funeral at Notre Dame Wednesday Forenoon.
The Rev. Father Charles L. O'Donnell, president of Notre Dame University, South Bend, died there early Monday morning, after an illness of more than a year of streptococcus infection.
The illness had incapacitated Father O'Donnell for many months. The last rites of the Catholic church were administered to the dying priest several weeks ago, but he rallied and for a time appeared improved.
A relapse which began the latter part of last week was beyond his strenght to meet, and he sank steadily until shortly after midnight Sunday night, when he passed away.
His brother, Michael O'Donnell, his two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Carey and Miss Mary O'Donnell, and other relatives of Kokomo had been summoned to his bedside Saturday and were with him through the closing hours of his life.
Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock, (central standard time), Wednesday forenoon, in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame. Burial will be in the Community cemetery which lies beyond the Holy Cross seminary.
The body of Father O'Donnell was to lie in state in the university parlor from Monday afternoon until Wednesday morning when it will be taken into Sacred Heart church for the obsequies, a guard of honor composed of members of the congregation will stand beside his casket today and tonight and the faculty club will perform this duty of honor from 8 o'clock Tuesday evening until 8 o'clock Wednesday morning.
