Captain William Anthony Harned moved his family from Red River County, Texas, to Alton, Madison County, Illinois, in 1833. He became the proprietor of the Mansion House (hotel). He was one of the "60 Militant Friends" of Rev. Elijah P. Lovejoy, and donated a first-story room in the Mansion House for the last Lovejoy meeting, held the evening before Lovejoy was assassinated.
