| Birth: | Jan. 1, 1919 | | Death: | May 22, 1990 |  Professional Boxer. Born Thomas Rocco Barbella, he earned the title of Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World from 1947 to 1948. He is best remembered for 3 intense championship bouts with Tony "The Man of Steel" Zale within 21 months. In 1991, he and Zale were inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame together. He was portrayed by actor Paul Newman in the autobiographical movie, "Somebody Up There Likes Me" (1956). After his boxing career, he appeared as an actor in films, including "Tony Rome" (1967), and on television, including "Miami Undercover," (1961).
