Frances daughter of Darius and Mahala (Norton)Stone

Lyons Herald, 23 Oct 1913

Frances Jane Hayes, daughter of Darius and Mahala Stone was born at Orangeville, N.Y., the 23rd day of September, 1834, and departed this life October 12th, 1913. She was the eldest of seven brothers and sisters, who have all preceded her to the Great Beyond.

In 1846 she came with her parents to Ionia county, Michigan, and settled on a farm of some four hundred acres in its primeval state, her old homestead being located on the farm now owned and occupied by Darius Stone.

April 18th, 1853 she was married to George J. Hayes, son of Hector and Lucinda Hayes, pioneers of 18?6. Soon after their marriage they began the battle of life on section
eleven, Ionia township, less than a mile from her girlhood home. Here by their united efforts a model farm was developed and fine buildings erected, and when in 1906, after fifty-three continuous years of farm life, they moved to the village of Muir, they left, as a result of their labors, one of the most beautiful homes in Ionia county.

To Mr. and Mrs. Hayes were born two daughters, Lizzie S., wife of L.N. Olmsted, and May L., wife of John Wheelock, now of Rock Ford, Colorado, both of whom survive to mourn the loss of a devoted mother.

Mrs. Hayes, early in life, Feb. 1st, 1857, united with the Church of Christ at Muir under the pastorate of Rev. Isaac Errett and continued throughout years of trial and suffering to be a devout and devoted Christian.

July 11th, 1897, she was stricken with paralysis and for more than sixteen years, has this patient woman's life been prolonged by loving hands and the best of care.

She was ever a devoted wife and affectionate mother, cheerful throughout the long years of her invalidism, even in that great sorrow brought to her by the sudden death on November 6th, 1908, of him who for more than fifty-five years had been her constant companion and faithful husband, and who for the last eleven years of his life, had been to her both nurse and husband.

Her's was a life filled with pain and suffering, borne with patience and fortitude, and she has passed to that reward which she so richly deserves, a home with Christ.
