WAYNESBORO - George Leroy Thomas, 68, entered into rest Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta. He was born on November 7, 1941 to Edna A. Thomas and the late Elus S. "Bill" Thomas. A lifelong resident of Burke County, he retired as an insurance agent and furniture salesman. Along with his wife, he owned and operated a personal care home. He was a very active member of Botsford Baptist Church where he served in numerous capacities for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Berlin Crisis. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Clark Thomas, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Alice Thomas, mother, Edna A. Thomas, four children, Beverly Nelson (Gene), Angela Petrie (Kevin), Steve Thomas (Lynda), James Thomas (Charlotte), all of Waynesboro; 4 brothers, James E. Thomas, Sr. (Dot), of Hephzibah, Edward S. Thomas (Sarah), Norman R. Thomas, both of Waynesboro, and David Thomas, of Thomaston, GA., 4 sisters, Barbara T. Aldridge, Melvis T. McCullough, Becky T. Phillips (Joey), all of Waynesboro, and Dorothy T. Dickey, of Fair Play, SC, 8 grandchildren, Ben Nelson and his fiancŽ, Elyse Walden, Jessica Thomas, Andrew Thomas, Austin Thomas, Taylor Thomas, Amber Duncan (Sean), Crystal Bailey, and Tori Sanders, and 1 great granddaughter, Ellye Thomas, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 8:00 pm, on Friday, December 18, 2009 at DeLoach-McKerley Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Botsford Baptist Church. Rev. Wayne Dixon, and Dr. G. Al Wright, Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Johnny Jenkins, Greg Coursey, Thomas Self, James Flakes, Steve Elliott, David Petrea, and Randy Scott. Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the Adult Men's Sunday School Class and all deacons of Botsford Baptist Church. Flowers are being accepted, however memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
