Death: Apr. 13, 1864

Daughter of Major David Shelton White, Sr. and Catherine Elizabeth Rucker White, Sallie was born in Elbert County, Georgia. She graduated from the Franklin Female Institute in Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1857 and gave the valedictory address for the class. In January, 1858 she married William Ruffin, son of General James Drury Ruffin and his wife Rosa Ruffin, at the home of her father. Their son, D.W. Ruffin stated in an oral history of his family that William and Sallie's fathers went together and gave them 8 slaves and a section of land located about 6 miles west of Senatobia, Mississippi as a wedding present. Their plantation home was known as Linwood. They were living there when William enlisted in the Confederate Army. Sallie died when she was only 26 years old, possibly as a result of childbirth.
