AMARIAH SUTTON DEAD
THE END CAME TO EARLY-DAY STOCK BUYER AT CENTER YESTERDAY

Amariah P. Sutton, aged 78 years, early day stock buyer, for years a merchant at Center and postmaster of that village, died Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock, at his late home in this city, 1019 South Main street. The funeral will be held from the late home at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was a brother of A. J. Sutton, a well known citizen of the county, who died last November. He was a son of Henry and Mary M. Sutton, and was born June 6, 1842, coming to Howard county with his parents in 1864 settling upon a farm near Center. Kokomo was then but a small place with no houses south of Wildcat creek and a plank sidewalk around the court house square. For a number of years , Mr. Sutton engaged In the implement and machine business at Center, serving as postmaster during that time. In an early day he was a stock buyer whose reputation for honesty and plighted word was of the highest. He was a very accommodating man and often sacrificed his own interests to be obliging to his friends. He was scrupulous about his word and his engagements and was held in highest esteem as a man and a citizen by all who bore his acquaintance.

In 1907 he moved to this city and formed a partnership with Keeler in the coal business. In a few years the firm sold Its business and the deceased retired from active business. Mr. Sutton In his religious belief was identified with the Primitive Baptists. His parents also supported that faith. Meetings of the organization were held at the Sutton home with great frequency. In politics Mr. Sutton was a lifelong republican, and a hard worker for his party, and was twice a candidate for sheriff, his opponent In one race being Isaac Wright, now mayor.

Mr. Sutton was united in marriage with Alice B. Edwards in 1872. To this union two sons were born, John C. Sutton who died in early childhood, and H. Clyde Sutton who with his mother, survives.
