Kokomo Daily Tribune - Wednesday, September 8, 1920:

Fernando C. Garr, aged 82 years, a veteran of the Civil War, member of the local post G.A.R., and a resident of Kokomo about ten years, died Tuesday at the Soldiers' Home in Marion, Indiana of which he had become a member The body was brought to this city by Smith & Hoff, but the funeral arrangements have not been made pending word from a son of the deceased, A. H. Garr of Palatka, Florida. The deceased is survived by the widow who resides on West Jackson Street, and also by a daughter, Mrs. C. C. Kerlin.

Mr. Garr was for more than forty years a railroad engineer. On April 18, 1861, he enlisted in Company F, 23rd New York Infantry, at Elmira, New York, and was discharged April 17, 1863. He enlisted two years later and was in the service until 1866.

Mr. Garr was a pioneer in railroading. Thirty years of his service he spent with the Wabash Railroad, living then at Peru. Upon his retirement, he came to Kokomo. While in the employment of the Wabash Railroad as an engineer, he was affected by the great railroad strike of 1894. He was in charge of the mail train between Chicago and Detroit and was the only man brave enough and determined enough to take the train through while the strike was on as he did despite threats of death and dangers of violence.
