"Flora Hoosier Democrat," Flora, Indiana, Page 1, January 14, 1922 MAN WHO BUILT FIRST HOME IN CITY (FLORA), DIES NEAR KOKOMO JAMES WILLIAM BUTCHER, age 81, one of the first citizens of Flora, Indiana, back when it boasted only a few houses, died at six o'clock Sunday evening at the home of his son, Clifford Butcher in Howard County, Indiana of Bright's disease. Funeral services were held from the home of another son, Arthur Butcher of Kokomo Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. Interment was made in Crown Point Cemetery in Kokomo.
Deceased was one of the early carpenters of Flora, Indiana and was born in Decatur County, Indiana, September 6, 1840. he came with his parents to Howard County in 1846 traveling by wagon and with the exception of the years he lived in Flora, Indiana, had always since then been a resident of Howard County. He built the first house in Flora and his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Blue, now residing near Delphi, was the first baby born here. he is survived by two daughters and three sons. They are: Mrs. Arthur Blue of near Delphi; Mrs. George Stratton, Arthur Butcher and Fred Butcher of Kokomo; and Clifford Butcher at whose home he died. There are also two sisters and three brothers surviving as follows: Isabelle Unger of Flora; Mrs. Wash Harness of Indianapolis; Spence Butcher of Kokomo; Elijah Butcher of Terre Haute and Milton Butcher, residing in Illinois. He was a member of the Christian Church.
