Born in Frankfort, Kentucky, to Emma Ruth and Schneider Downs. Attended grade school in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and moved to Santa Fe for high school.

After graduation, Dave joined the Army, where he served in Korea and Southeast Asia from 1962-1966.

Dave worked for Boeing in Seattle, then in Germany for three years as a flight simulator technician for Singer-Link Corporation. He received his Bachelors of Science in Electronics Engineering from Fresno State College, and his Masters of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in Marquette.

Dave settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he worked with a team at Stanford University, developing motion control (robotics), a new technology.

He had a consulting business which evolved into a design and manufacturing company, The Motion Group, in 1993 with his business partner and future wife, Nancy Sutherland. Dave served as The Motion Group's head of engineering design and new product development from the company's inception until his death on December 10, 2009.

Dave was passionate about many things, including Valley water rights, the local Hmong community, classic rock and football. He offered shelter to abandoned horses, hosted tractor rides for his grandkids and had an uncanny ability to repair anything.

He is loved and missed by family and friends at home and at work. They wish peace, rest, and happiness for Dave in his new life until they meet with him again.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James; and his son, Matthew.

He is survived by Nancy, his wife of six years; his two step-children; and his five step-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at Boice Funeral Home, 308 Pollasky Ave, Clovis, on Saturday, December 19, at 11:00 a.m. Remembrances.

American Cancer Society , 2222 W. Shaw Ave., Suite 201, Fresno, Ca. 93711.
