BUMGARNER KILLED IN CAR ACCIDENT

TAYLORSVILLE - James Barry Bumgarner, son of Alexander County's clerk of court, was killed as a result of a three car collision Sunday afternoon.
Six other persons were injured in the accident, one seriously.
The accident took place at 5:30 p.m. on NC 16 at its intersection with Third Ave. in Taylorsville. The site is almost immediately in front of Alexander County Hospital.
Bumgarner, 27, of 1701 West Boulevard, Charlotte, died two hours later at Alexander County Hospital.
Wayne Arnold Height, 27, of route 4, Taylorsville, was first taken to Alexander County Hospital then transferred to N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was said to be in critical condition.
Height was one of the two passengers in a 1969 Mustang driven by Bumgarner, a former resident of Alexander County. The other passenger, Sammy Wayne Bebber, 30, route 4, Taylorsville, was admitted to the local hospital where his condtion is said to be satisfactory.
Also admitted to the hospital was Marshall Richard Williams, 28, route 4, Taylorsville, operator of a 1969 oldsmobile that was involved. He was also said to be in satisfactory condition.
Treated for less serious injuries and later released from the hospital were Mrs. Katherine Williams, a passenger in the oldsmobile; David Wilmer Parsons, 55, route 2, Taylorsville, operator of a 1958 Chevrolet that was involved and his wife, a passenger in the car.
Total damage to the three cars was estimated at $4,400.
According to the investigation of Taylorsville Police Chief Ned Herman, Bumgarner's car was headed north on NC 16, the oldsmobile was moving south on NC 16, and the Chevrolet was traveling west on Third Ave. The accident report indicates that the Chevrolet struck the right side of the Mustang, literally pushing it into the path of the oncoming oldsmobile. The Mustang and the Oldsmobile collided almost head-on.
Charges are said to be pending.
The fatal accident was the seventh on Alexander County roads in 1969.
Bumgarner, known in Alexander County by Barry, was a salesman for Genuine Auto Parts.
A native of Caldwell County, he was born May 25, 1942, son of Mr. and Mrs. Atwell Bumgarner.
