Thomas J. Jessup was born in Darke County, Ohio. FYI the family has alternately spelled the last name Jessiop, Jesiop and Jessup.

He first married Elizabeth Hatfield in Howard County, Indiana on March 6, 1851. They had four children: Will, Sarah E., Allie M. and John Wilbur (I haven't found where any of them are buried yet).

He then married Sara E. Snow in Howard County, Indiana on May 22, 1859 (and her gravestone is shared with his - your Find A Grave Memorial# 45461877. Thomas and Sarah had the following children: Charles, Edwin J. Tirzy C., George A. and Florence E.

Thomas was a farmer. But at the time of his enlistment he listed his occupation as wagon maker. He enlisted in Indiana as a private in the 5th Regiment Cavalry (90th Regiment Volunteers) of Indiana at Kent on Aug. 22, 1862, to serve three years in the Union Army.

According to a doctor's report, Thomas was injured in the line of duty in April 1863, causing chronic inflammation of his right eye with impaired vision and chronic abscess of sectrum, making him "incapable of performing the duties of a soldier."

Because of his injury and inability to perform active duty, Private Thomas J. Jessup was transferred to Company G of the 2nd Battalion, 17th Regiment of the United States Invalid Corps.

According to his pension papers, he was "never at the front" because of his stay in the hospital.

He was mustered out on June 15, 1865 in Pulaski, Tenn.

After the war, he lived in Jackson Township, Howard County, Indiana and moved to Perry Township, Perry County, Arkansas in 1880. He died at his home on Markland Avenue in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.
