HERRING

Vera Louise Barger, daughter of Ray and Nettie Barger, was born Oct. 22, 1905, on a farm northwest of Derby, Iowa. She passed away March 19, 1998 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center.

After graduation from Derby High School, Vera attended Parsons College in Bloomfield, Iowa and graduated with a two year degree. She taught school in Lucas and Rock Rapids.

She married Ralph Herring on Dec. 21, 1928. To this union four children were born, one daughter, Virginia, and three sons, Bill, Clyde and Earl.

Vera spent most of her time in the early years on the farm raising her children. She was an active leader in 4-H clubs and one year received the "Mother of the Year" award. Vera was an active member of the Derby Methodist Church and in later years became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Chariton.

After her children were raised she finished two years of college at Drake University and received her B. S. Degree. She then taught school at Freedom rural school, Derby Elementary, and the Mormon Trail School at Humeston. During this time, Vera moved to Derby, Iowa, and was an active member of the Derby Garden Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

In later years she moved to Southgate and then to Northridge Living Center in Chariton.

Vera was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved her family dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; two brothers, Harold and Loren; and one son, Bill.

Vera is survived by her daughter, Virginia Toll, of Overland Park, Kansas, her sons, Clyde Herring, of Chariton, and Earl Herring, of Brillion, Wisc., 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and her sister, Mildred Snook, of Saline, Mich.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 23, 1998, at the Fielding Funeral Home with Pastor Gary DeGeest officiating. Burial was at the Derby Cemetery. Bearers were her grandsons, Ralph Toll, Paul Toll, Dan Herring, Mike Herring, David Herring, Joel Herring and Casey Herring.
