In 1836, Abram R. NICHOLS and an older brother, Horatio R., started West to seek a home. They came to Lake County, and purchased a claim of 160 acres in what is now Cedar Creek Township, for which they paid $250. The same year, they took a claim of 160 acres adjoining, when they went to Michigan City and engaged in lumbering for the winter. In the spring, they returned to Lake County, and began to improve their land.
