Has been seen in some genealogies as "William Madison Casteel." All official records have only provided the name Madison.

The 1st census that starts giving the names of each family member is the 1850 census. The 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 census all give his name as Madison only. The 1890 census was destroyed. The 1900 census he is again listed as Madison, and then he died in 1906 before the next 1910 census.

Madison was in the Civil War, these records just give his name as Madison;

Madison does have a grandson named William Madison Casteel however, who lived in the same place, but he was born in 1903 and died in 1957 in the same place.
