Mattie Effie Studebaker was the daughter of John Wesley Studebaker and Amanda Clementine Kelsey. She was born April 26, 1880 in Decatur, Wise Co, TX. She had two brothers, Joseph and Charles and one sister, Minnie. In addition, she was raised with half-siblings Frances, Julia, and Nancy from her mother's first marriage to Bartlett Wesley Fry. She married Levi Burton Kelton on May 18, 1899 in Southmayd, Grayson Co, TX. They had one son, John Lee Kelton, Sr. born on February 26, 1900 in Winslow, Washington Co, AR. The marriage quickly ended in divorce. They remarried on January 11, 1902 in Washington Co, AR. Once again, the marriage ended in divorce. On June 8, 1904, Mattie married widower Avery Anderson Joyce in Sebastian Co, AR. They were the parents of Hazel Marjorie Joyce born December 29, 1905 and Taylor Foster Joyce born September 16, 1908. Avery died the next year and is buried with his first wife, Josephine. Mattie then married John Chesley Crawford on February 15, 1911 in Sebastian Co, AR. "Daddy" Crawford was adored by all his step children and grandchildren. "Daddy" Crawford passed away on January 1, 1950. Mattie then married widower James Noah Terry on November 3, 1950. She had met him many years prior when she lived in Washington Co, AR. He died in a Fayetteville hospital on August 5, 1962. His children thought she was a gold-digger and refused to let her even visit her husband in the hospital. Mattie died in Ft. Smith, AR the following year on February 28, 1963. Mattie Effie Studebaker Kelton Joyce Crawford Terry was buried in the same cemetery as her third husband. Although her legal surname was Terry when she died, her children buried her with the last name of her beloved third husband, John Crawford.

Family History: Her great grandfather, Philip Studebaker, was captured along with an older brother and sister, Joseph and Elizabeth, by the Delaware and Shawnee Indians during the French and Indian War. Philip's parents, Heinrich Studebaker and Unknown Kellough Studebaker, were murdered (along with a toddler and unborn infant). The three captured Studebaker children were adopted into the Delaware tribe. Philip was kept for six years, while his brother and sister were kept for nine years and all were eventually released to relatives. Joseph and Philip assimilated back into society. Elizabeth could not adjust, returned to the Delaware Indians, and married a Chief. Heinrich Studebaker came to American in 1736, along with brothers Peter and Clement, and several cousins. The descendants of their cousins started the Studebaker Wagon Co., and later, the Studebaker Automobile Co.
