Dr. George A. Thomas was the 4th of 7 children born to farmer William Thomas and Catherine Vallandingham. George’s grandfathers, F. Thomas and Richard Vallandingham, as well as his great grandfather Thomas Woolfolk, were soldiers of the War of 1812.

During the Civil War, George enlisted with Polk’s Scouts, CSA and served five months with them. In the fall of 1862 he joined the 12th KY Cavalry, CSA and served until the end of the war. He fought in the battles of: Okolona, MS; Union City, TN; Brice’s Cross Roads, Harrisburg, Athens, and Sulphur Trestle, AL; Pulaski, Columbus, Franklin, and Murfreesborough, TN,’ among others. His brother Richard fought with the 2nd KY, CSA but was captured in 1862 and spent the rest of the war in a POW camp.

After the war George attended Notre Dame College, IN for about 10 months. He then returned to Ballard Co., KY and began the study of medicine under the mentorship of Dr. William H. Parham, who was the first husband of his sister Sarah Elizabeth. George then went to Louisville University where he graduated from the Medical Department in 1870.

He returned to Ballard Co. where he farmed and set up his medical practice in the town of Bardwell.

In 1873 George married Hannah J. Webb, the daughter of William Webb and Ann Woolfolk.

They had eight children: Kenton 1877-1888, George Hubert 1875, William Wallace 1877, Julia A. 1879, Robert Bruce 1881, Elizabeth “Bettie” 1884, Charles 1886, and Richard Luther 1889.

Dr. Thomas died at work in his office in Bardwell. He is buried here in the family graveyard, on what was his father’s farm, with his parents and several siblings.

By 1910 Hannah had moved to Quanah, Comanche Co., Oklahoma with her children George, William, Robert, Bettie, Charles and Richard. Hannah died there in 1924. Hannah, and sons George, William and Robert; and her sister Julia Webb Violett and brother-in-law Stephan hanson Violett, are all buried in the Cache Cemetery, Comanche Co., OK,.
