Leonard was born in Barnet, married in Barnet, and died in Barnet. However, he grew up in a family that made regular trips between Barnet and the Boston area. He would have had many urban experience not typical of the local farmers. Most census years he is listed as a farmer plus grain, flour or feed merchant. In 1910, he is the only working member living in his widowed mother's household. His widow sister Emma, and her two teenage daughters are also there. The following year, he marries a local girl. By 1938 he and his partner, George A. Walker, have move the business to St. Johnsbury. They are listed in both Barnet's and St. Johnsbury's city directories that year. His son Hamilton is working for him in grain business in St. Johnsbury.
