Marion Ensign St John
Birth: Jul. 16, 1856
Clayton County
Iowa, USA
Death: Nov. 8, 1936
Hennepin County
Minnesota, USA

Marion Ensign St John was born July 16, 1856 on the family farm near Volga, Iowa. She came from a pioneer family who settled in northeastern Iowa shortly before the Civil War. It was during this time that a large migration of settlers established homesteads and started farms around Arlington, Brush Creek and Volga. Included in this migration were members of the Ensign clan and the St Johns, the Phillips, the Butlers, the McLains, and the Welchs, to mention a few. Many of these families intermarried. A case in point was a member of the Ensign family, Francis "Frank" Ensign, had married Syrena May Darr in 1876 and had died in 1884, living May a widow with four young children. Five years later she married Daniel Harley St John, Marion's future brother-in-law. Marion and Frank St John were united in marriage at Strawberry Point by the Reverend Stearms on December 3, 1876. They raised two children: Seth Raymond, who was born the summer of 1878 and lived one week; and Milton Ensign, who was born July 2, 1892. Milton was born on his father's farm which was part of his Grandfather Nehemiah St John's farm where he lived there until his marriage in 1915. His parents took over the St John farm and expanded it. They lived their entire married life here. Marion passed away on November 8, 1936 at Minneapolis, Minnesota and is buried at the Taylorsville cemetery next to her husband of fifty-four years.

A special blooming rose in remembrance to a true pioneer mother. I regret that I never had the privilege of knowing or meeting her, but my father (Lewis St John) spoke highly of her.
