Richard St John, son of David and Frances (McLain) St John, was born on July 2, 1892 on the family farm located near Volga, Clayton County, Iowa. He was the twin brother of Maude and the youngest of five children. His parents had established a farm along the border of Fayette-Clayton counties in the northeastern section of Iowa. His grandparents had moved from Wisconsin to Clayton county in 1852 and with other members of the St John clan, developed a farm in the area. All around Arlington, Volga City and Brush Creek one could find land being farmed not only by his grandfather Nehemiah St John but by Richard's uncles including Robert Freeman St John, Riley Butler who married Ruth St John, Daniel St John, Frank St John, and Winfield Scott St John.
Richard died in infancy and was buried at the Reed cemetery near Volga, Clayton County, Iowa.

Richard never had a chance to experience the joys and trials of life having died in infancy. A memorial to his short life is appropriate.|
