The Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers (State Printer, 1910) says Ebenezer B. Gilbert was born in Illinois and was a resident of Peosta, Iowa, when he enlisted on 08/22/1862. On 08/23/1862 he was mustered into Company H of the 21st Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged with the regiment on 07/15/1865 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The postwar history of the regiment, The Twenty-First Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry (King, Fowle & Co., Milwaukee, 1891) says he participated in the Battle of Port Gibson, Mississippi (which was on May 1, 1863), that assault at the Big Black River Bridge (which was on May 17, 1863), and the subsequent sieges of Vicksburg and Jackson, Mississippi. It also says, as most references to the regiment indicated, that he was in the Battle of Champion's Hill (which was on May 16, 1863), but that's erroneous. The regiment was present, but it was held in reserve the entire day, did not participate in the battle and, except for men from two Companies who did some late skirmishing, merely helped gather arms and guard prisoners after the battle.
The current listing for Ebenezer has links to five children. An online source (www.MyTrees.Com) says Ebenezer Bess Gilbert (1839-1918) was married in 1876 to S. Phoebe Wheeldon (1859-1839) and children included Minnie Gertrude (Gilbert) Gooch born in 1876. Memorial #57827067 says Minnie (05/17/80-04/16/07) was buried in Avon Cemetery where most other family members were buried. It seems she should be added to the current Memorials for Ebenezer and his wife, Susan.
