Former Soldotna resident GEORGE ROBERT MATRANGA, 68, of Vancouver, Wash., died Aug. 22, 2000, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna. A funeral was at Trinity Christian Church in Soldotna. Pastor Terry Bomar officiated. Visitation was for one hour prior to service. His cremains were inurned in Vancouver, Wash.
Mr. Matranga was born Dec. 31, 1931, in Sacramento, Calif., where he was raised and educated. He joined the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Curtis and the U.S.S. Rendova aircraft carriers. Both carriers were assigned to the Atomic Energy Commission, so he watched the first hydrogen bomb explode. In 1960 Mr. Matranga brought his young family to Alaska to homestead on Strawberry Road. He successfully ran his own water-well-drilling business for several years. His family wrote: ''Being multitalented, he worked as a bridge builder, carpenter and truck driver, eventually becoming a Teamster. He also became a licensed substance abuse counselor. He worked at Prudhoe Bay all during the pipeline construction and hauled multiple joints of the pipe itself. He was promoted to terminal manager and then to director of marketing for Crowley Maritime in Anchorage, from which he retired in 1984.'' Mr. Matranga was a member of Glad Tidings Church in Vancouver, Wash. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, fishing, and crosswords. The family added that he never met a stranger and was loved by all. ''He was kind, generous, creative, and had a great sense of humor and a vivid imagination. He was the best father and husband a family could be blessed with. He surely will be missed.''
Mr. Matranga is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ella S. Matranga; sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Teresa Matranga and Brian and Hope Matranga; daughter and son-in-law, Jack and Carey Foster; grandchildren, Jason and Kimberly Foster, Jeremy and Jenna Foster, Ella Foster, Tristan and Marcia Anderson, Sloan and Kimasia Wallace, Kevin and Danielle Price, Shawna and Casey Matranga, and Shanell Anderson; and four great-grandchildren. Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
