Ruth St John
Birth: Aug. 5, 1877
Fayette County
Iowa, USA
Death: Jan. 21, 1898
West Union
Fayette County
Iowa, USA

Ruth was the eldest daughter of Winfield Scott and Marion Minerva (Philllips) St John and was born on August 5, 1877, most likely on her parent's farm which was located near Arlington, Iowa on the Fayette County line, but in Clayton County. In March of 1885 the family moved to Arlington and in a few years, moved again, this time to West Union, Iowa. In the spring of 1897 Ruth was through school and working in a drug store. In the fall her brother Irving had malerial fever and was sick for weeks. January first was his first day out and that day Ruth came down with a fever and became very sick. According to her mother in an interview, Dr. Zoller, the local physician, seemed to think it did not amount to much. But she died January 21, 1898. She was twenty years of age when she passed away. Ruth died on her grandmother Phillip's birthday. Ruthie (as she was called by family and friends) is buried in the Reed Cemetery, the same one that her grandparents, Nehemiah and Elmena St John are buried in. Her Uncle Myron is also buried there.

Aunt Ruth was my father's (Lewis Holland St John) eldest sister and I never had a chance to know her. A special bouquet of roses in remembrance to one who passed away so young and had such promise.
