Elmena Freeman St John
Birth: Mar. 20, 1820
Conquest
Cayuga County
New York, USA
Death: Dec. 20, 1887
Clayton County
Iowa, USA

Elmena was the eldest child of John and Amanda Lucas Freeman and was born on March 20, 1820 on their farm near Conquest, New York. She spent her early years at Conquest and then went with her family to Michigan in 1835. Soon afterwards, they moved to Porter, Rock County, Wisconsin. She married Nehemiah St John on February 5, 1839 when she was nineteen years of age. They established a farm in Rock County and while they lived in Wisconsin, they had seven children: Robert Freeman, Ruth Emma, Daniel Harley, Amanda Alzina, David Barber, Frank and Winfield Scott (my grandfather). In 1852 Elmena and her growing family moved to Clayton County, Iowa where her younger sister Caroline and her husband Joseph Bradshaw had moved in 1849. Nehemiah established a sizeable farm which was located on the Fayette-Clayton county line and near the present town of Arlington. During this time they had two more children: Myron and Seth. They spent the remainder of their lives on their farm in Clayton County. Illness was not a stranger to Elmena during much of her life. She had a stroke of paralysis on one side of her face that blinded one eye in her early thirties and toward the end of her life she suffered from typhoid fever and pneumonia. She died on December 20, 1887 at the age of 67 years. The Reverend Matt Wing preached at Elmena's funeral service.

A blooming rose in remembrance of my great-grandmother Elmena who raised nine beautiful children, one of whom was my grandfather Winfield Scott St John.
