WORTHY PIONEER ENTERS HIS WELL-EARNED REST
Came to Republic County in March, 1886
J.R. Jenkins, pioneer resident of this community, passed away at his home in this city last Friday after a short illness.
Joseph Rueben Jenkins was born near Verdon, Richardson county (sic), Nebraska, March 10, 1858, and departed this life June 2, 1933, at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 23 days.
He grew to manhood in Richardson county (sic), and in 1881, February the 16, he was married to Louisa Jane Harris, who was reared in the same locality. They continued to live there until March 1886. Then they moved to Republic county (sic), Kansas, four miles southeast of Chester, Nebraska.
Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins lived on this farm for forty years, where they reared their family of five girls and three boys, all of whom are living.
Among his many neighbors and friends, Mr. Jenkins was known for his kindness to those in need. When sickness or death entered the community he would gladly go to do whatever could be done. The night was not to dark, nor the day too cold and stormy for him to set out on his errands of mercy and help. Thus his own life was illuminated with the rays of joy and happiness which he brought into the lives of others.
He leaves to mourn his departure his loving and faithful wife and the eight children: Mrs. Bertie Randels of Fort Morgan, Colorado, Mrs. Lizzie Curtis of Fairbury, Mrs. Mabel Bise of Nora, Mrs. Alice George of Munden, Kansas; Mrs. Carrie Dettman of Narka, Kansas; and Francis, Roy and Charlie all of Chester, also 23 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, several half-brothers and sisters, and a host of other relatives and friends.
"Darling father, you have left us,
Gone to your eternal rest.
We, who love you, how we'll miss you.
Yet, we feel that God knows best."

[Thank you, Peggy #45095255]
