The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Saturday, December 6, 1879
About six weeks ago, MR. WILLIAM HOLLAR, of Washington Township, was bitten by a mule having the glanders. About three weeks afterwards, MR. HOLLAR was taken sick and kept the bed till last Tuesday night when his suffering was relieved by death. Dr. Dicks was the attending physician. Tuesday morning Dr. F.M. Everett was called in consultation, but no relief could be given.
It is proper to mention that physicians caution persons handling glandered horses not to allow the poison to touch the raw flesh or any part of the mucous membrane, as in that case the disease will be taken into the system and death will result.
(Note:) The Chariton Leader picked this article up from the Corydon Times.
