Shortly after the secession of South Carolina Larisey did duty on the coast with one of the companies of militia. He went to Virginia with the Palmetto Guard, Capt. G. B. Cuthbert, and was in the first battle of Manassas, where, common with other hero's of that sterling command so displayed conspicuous courage. In camp he was an exemplary soldier; on the march he was ever cheerful, and in battle he was noted for his bravery and coolness. In youth he had been fond of sports and was a splendid rider. Desiring to enter the cavalry service, he obtained a transfer to one of the most famous of the regiments of South Carolina cavalry. On the coast of Virginia he performed arduous and dangerous service. His career until the surrender was marked by fearlessness and fidelity. He was a favorite with his comrades and his commanding officer complimented him for the ready and resolute manner he endure hardships and perils. Colonel Larisey was a lawyer, a brilliant advocate and a credit to his profession.
