Death: Jul. 19, 1940

Caroline was my mother's grandmother. Since I did not know Caroline; I thought my mother could describe her grandmother to all of us:

Q: What do you remember most about your Grandmother?
My Mom: Two things, always cooking and being a Society Lady.

Q: Society Lady?
My Mom: Always entertaining; having luncheons or going to luncheons. All these ladies would come over all dressed up and with hats on. They would put their hats in the bedroom on a bed. And Marilyn [note: My mom's sister] and I would go into the bedroom and try on each and every hat and look at ourselves in the mirror. We would discuss which hat was the nicest or prettiest.

Q: Did your grandma or her friends ever know?
My Mom: If they did, they never said anything to us.

Q: Did you think your grandma was pretty?
My Mom: I thought she was pretty. She had pretty hair that was always done up nicely. She was always nicely dressed. I mean fancy-dressed and always made up.

Q: You mentioned that she would cook and bake a lot...
My Mom: Oh yes. We were always getting to eat her pastries and Swedish cookies and stuff. Whenever she gave us anything she would have us ask for it in Swedish or say the name in Swedish.

Q: Do you remember any of the Swedish you learned as a child?
My Mom: No, wished that I did.

Q: So your Grandma was active in society. What about church?
My Mom: Grandma and Grandpa Swanson were charter members of Eden Lutheran Church. So they were very active. Grandma did a lot of stuff with the Ladies Aid Society.

Q: As grandmothers go...do you think she was a good grandma?
My Mom: Oh yes! She was always cooking and baking and giving to us kids. I never, ever saw her un-made. She always had pretty dresses and hats. She would always give us hugs and kisses. She and her sister, Aunt Jenny, would always tell me how much I looked like a Swede. She was a very good grandma. And, I really liked my grandpa too.
