GALESBURG -- Orville C. Abel, 73, of 1114 Windcrest Acres, formerly of Abingdon and Gilson, died at 1:26 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10,
1998, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
Born April 21, 1925, in Indian Point Township, Knox County, to John and Bertha Bennett Abel, he married LaVonne Moore on Jan. 13, 1947, in Abingdon. She survives.
Also surviving are five daughters, Vicki Syrkel, Kay Guiste and Lisa Abel, all of Galesburg, Karen Smith of Maquon and Dixie Hare of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Betty Howard of Galesburg, Dorothea Bonney of Maquon, Darlene Thurman of Abingdon and Marlene Moore of London Mills.
A maintenance welder for Butler Manufacturing for 43 years, he retired July 31, 1992. He was a member of the Galesburg and United Steel Workers of America.
He served in the Marine Corps from 1943 until 1947 and from 1950 to 1951. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Kevin Treptow will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oneida Cemetery.
