Harpswell—George William Barnes, age 80, died Friday, April 25, 2008 at a local hospital. He was born November 14, 1927 in Lynn, MA the son of Henry Willis and Ferne L. Britt Barnes. He was a graduate of Brunswick High School and University of Maine, Orono. He married Jane Dick. Mr. Barnes lived in this area all of his life. He was a civil engineer and President of Wright-Pierce, Topsham. Though a civil engineer by trade, he also had worked as a boat builder and lobsterman. He was a member of The Grange, Harpswell Neck. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and catch and release fly fishing. He had become a master rod builder and gave many of his bamboo rods to friends and family. To a special few, he had also shared the secrets of his delicate craft of building bamboo rods. He is survived by his wife Jane of Harpswell; two sons, Robin Blair Barnes of Brunswick, Henry Walter Barnes and his wife Darlene of Harpswell; a daughter Wendy Jane Barnes of Harpswell; a sister, Patricia Barnes Moody of Harpswell; four grandchildren; a niece and two nephews.
