Lowell William Anderson, 90, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at the Methodist Medical Center.
Lowell, or "Andy" as he liked to be called, was born July 23, 1919 in Ottawa, Kansas. He was the son of Frank and Ellen Anderson who preceded him in death. He was married to Cleo W. Anderson, who also preceded him, for 59 years.
He grew up and was educated in Kansas. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1942 with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering. He subsequently took courses in Industrial Management at the University of Tennessee.
After working for the US Civil Service in Radar Development and Calco Chemical Company in New Jersey, he joined the Manhattan Project in June of 1944. He worked in plant pilot work at the University of Columbia before transferring to Oak Ridge K-25 in November of 1944. He worked for Union Carbide Corporation in various positions including Development, Operations, Shift Superintendant and Engineering until retirement on March 31, 1984.
He was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church of Oak Ridge.
He was a life member and full certificate holder in the Oak Ridge Power Squadron. He served as Squadron Commander in 1965 and 1966. He served as District Commander in 1974 and 1975. He was a Honorary Life Member of Oak Ridge Elks Lodge No. 1684 where he served as Exalted Ruler in 1960-61.He served on many committees in the Tennessee Elks Association, serving as its State President in 1974-75 and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Elks Association from 1985 until 1999. He served the Grand Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in many capacities, including District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Certified Ritual Judge, Grand Lodge State Association Committee and Grand Lodge Ritual Committee. He was a Member of the Tennessee Elks Hall of Fame.
He is survived by daughter Sharon Frost and husband Arthur H. (Jack) Frost, III of Oak Ridge; daughter Joyce Helton and husband James T. Helton of Smyrna, TN; Granddaughters Michelle Frost of Clinton and Jennifer Jennings and husband Allen E. Jennings of Oak Ridge; Grandsons Robert Helton and Tyler Helton of Smyrna; and three great grandchildren Johnny Clark, Allie Jennings, and Anastaia Petty.
The family will receive friends Thursday, October 8, 2009 from 5 – 7pm at Weatherford Mortuary. An Elks service will follow at 7:00pm with members of BPOE #1684 officiating. The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Tennessee Elk Benevolent Trust, c/o Lionel E. Bliss, 324 Willie D Drive, Jefferson City, TN 37760.
A graveside service will be held Friday, October 9, 2009 at 10am at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Craig Kallio officiating.
