August Charles Schumaker was born on 11 April 1851 in Colorado County, Texas. He was a son of Ahlert Henry Schumaker and Helena Mary Schumaker. His parents and six older siblings, Heinrich, Anna, Meta, Diedrich, Johann, and Eise, left Oldenburg, Germany and sailed from Bremen, Germany to Galveston, Texas, arriving on 27 November 1847 on the Barque Franziska.

The Schumaker and Pelzer families had long-standing ties. In 1850, the Schumaker family was living in Colorado County, Texas next to the farm of Adam and Catherine Pelzer, August's future in-laws. In 1870, August was working on the farm of Henry Laas in Lavaca County, Texas, eight houses down from his future wife, Magdalena Pelzer.
On 30 December 1873, August married Magdalena Pelzer, the daughter of Adam and Catherine Pelzer, in the Zion Lutheran Church in Sublime, Lavaca County, Texas.

August and Lena were the parents of 5 children: Emma Elise Helina (1875 - 1880), Charles August (1877 - 1945), an infant who was born and died in 1877, Dorothea (1879 - 1922), and Wilhelm Johann (1884 - 1886). Only Charles August and Dorothea lived to adulthood.

About 1908, the family moved from Sublime to Taiton in Wharton County, Texas where they were engaged in farming and ranching.

August was widowed on 10 December 1917 when his wife Lena died at the age of 60.
August lived another 15 years. He died in Taiton, Texas on 12 Dec 1932 at the age of 81.
