Elizabeth W.J. Rice, 100, of 24 Tabor Crossing, formerly of South Hadley, Amherst and Brewster, MA, died Wednesday at her home. Born in Holyoke, she was the daughter of the late Philip M. and Fern C. (Wheeler) Judd.
Elizabeth was educated in Holyoke and graduated from the Emma Willard School in Schenectady, NY. She received her bachelor's degree from Wellesley College in 1930. Following her graduation from Wellesley, Elizabeth attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she met her late husband, Cecil C. Rice. Mr. Rice predeceased Elizabeth in 1969.
She lived in South Hadley from the late 1930's until 1987, when she moved to Brewster to be near her daughter and her family. Elizabeth and her family had summered in Brewster for many years prior to that move. Elizabeth returned to the area, settling at Applewood in Amherst in 1994 following the death of her daughter, Carolyn Nahon. In 2005 she moved to Longmeadow.
Elizabeth had been a member of the United Congregational Church in Holyoke and was formerly a member of the Congregational Church. She was a 75 year member of the D.A.R.; had been an active member for 50 of those years and was a Past Regent of her chapter.
Elizabeth is survived by her son, Jonathan P. Rice, Esq. and his wife Susan of Springfield; her son-in-law, Albert Nahon of Harwichport: two grandchildren, Laura Boer and her husband Marco of Hingham, and Philip Rice and his wife Jennifer of Alexandria, VA; and four great-granddaughters, Sydney, Lydia, Camille and Beatrix Boer.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 27th at 1 PM at Glenmeadow in Longmeadow. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke.
Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA and Hospice of Western New England, Inc., 50 Maple St., Springfield, MA 01103. Dickinson-Streeter Funeral Home of Springfield has been entrusted with Elizabeth's care and arrangements.
