Charles Alvin Kienberger, 89, of Oak Ridge died Wednesday morning, Oct. 27, 1999, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Kienberger began working for Union Carbide in 1943 at Columbia University and was transferred to Oak Ridge with his family in 1944. For several years, he was supervisor of the Uranium Analysis Department at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant for years until he was transferred to a similar position at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. He retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division in 1975.

He was born on July 14, 1910, on his family's farm near Rich Hill, Mo., and graduated from Rich Hill High School in 1929. He majored in chemistry at Missouri Valley College and earned his bachelor's degree in 1933.

Mr. Kienberger's first job after college involved teaching high school math and science and coaching boys' and girls' basketball teams. He quickly rose to the position of principal at Francis Howell High School. He also worked for an engineering firm and the Atlas blasting powder company.

He and his wife, Lorine McElhiney Kienberger, who survives him, were married in 1941, just a short time before he received orders to report to Oak Ridge.

Mr. Kienberger and his wife were charter members of Faith Lutheran Church and continued to be active members through the years, serving in many capacities.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by their daughter, Charlene Smith and her husband, George Smith, of Oak Ridge; two granddaughters, Lauryl Ann Smith of Bronxville, N.Y., and Kristin Malia Smith of Oak Ridge; his brother, Hubert Kienberger of Palos Verde, Calif.; and two sisters-in-law, Clara Kienberger of Fairway, Kan., and Bertha Kienberger of Appleton, Mo.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Faith Lutheran Church with the Rev. James P. Evers officiating.

Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Faith Lutheran Church, 1300 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830; or to Keystone Elder Day Care, P.O. Box 4669, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
