JAMES DOUGLAS PATE
RINGGOLD, LA. - Services for Mr. James Douglas "Doug" Pate,75, of Ringgold, Louisiana will be held Sunday, October 2, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. In the Rockett Funeral Home Chapel, Ringgold, Louisiana. Officiating will be Bro. Jerry Hodge of University Church of Christ in Shreveport, Louisiana. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Ringgold, Louisiana.
Mr. Doug was born November 29, 1929 in McCullough County, Texas to Artis and Louise Freeman Pate. He passed away Friday, September 30, 2005 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He graduated from Brady High School in Brady, Texas and attended Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas where he was the Golden Glove Lightweight Champion and lettered in baseball. Mr. Doug served in the United States Army 142nd Infantry, 36th Division, Company "C" at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Mr. Doug moved to Ringgold, Louisiana where he proudly served in his community for 55 years. He was a long time member of the Ringgold Town Council and Bienville Parish School Board where he was a past Vice President. Mr. Doug was a past Chief of the Rescue Squad and Fire Department where he served for many years. He was a Woodmen Of the World Represenative and President of Chapter # 125. He served on the Ringgold Slabtown Festival Committee for many years and was a comissioner on the Bienville Parish Hospital Service District #1. He was a charter member of the Ringgold Jaycees where he served as President. Mr. Doug built many homes and businesses in his community working for Mr. Thomas Koonce and Mr, Travis Thomas. After retiring from construction, he and his wife owned and operated Archway Flower Shop for over 17 years before retiring in 1997.
He was a very devoted and loving husband, daddy and granddaddy who was very active in his children's extra-curricular activities. He was a charter member of the Ringgold Recreation Club where he served as a little league baseball coach and a parish commissioner of baseball. Mr. Doug was and avid supporter of Ringgold High School athletics, FBLA and FFA while his children were growing up.
Mr. Doug was a faithful member of University Church of Christ in Shreveport, Louisiana. along with dual membership in the Ringgold Church of Christ. At one time he preached the Gospel at Ringgold Church of Christ and Coushatta Church of Christ. He was on the Board of Directors at the Ark-La-Tex Christian Encampment. He was well known for his knowledge of the Bible and used that knowledge to bring others to Christ.
Mr. Doug was always entertaining people with his jokes and outgoing personality. He loved to go to the Ringgold Nurse Care Center with Bill Conley and play music for the residents. Playing gospel, country, and bluegrass music with his camping buddies was one of Mr. Doug's most enjoyable pastimes.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Myrle Pate of Ringgold, LA.; 2 sons, Floyd Pate and his wife Susan of Castor, LA. and Roddy Pate of Shreveport, LA.; daughter, Bonnie Tullis and her husband, Edward of Jamestown LA.; grandchildren, Cliff Long and his wife Tracy of Haughton, LA., Shelly Heron and her husband Brad of Gibsland, LA., Charla Guillot and her husband Rick of Shreveport, LA., Steven Pate of Ruston, LA., Sarah Myers and her husband Rusty of Jamestown, LA., Vicki Anderson and her husband, Donnie of Fort Smith, AR., Jennifer Tullis of Houston, TX. and Andrea Tullis of Ringgold, LA.; great grandchildren, Britney and Amanda Long of Haughton, LA., Tyler Tullis and Tommy Myers of Jamestown, LA., Bridget Mooney, Amber Becker and April Austin of Fort Smith, AR.; Great-great-granddaughter, Autumn Becker of Fort Smith, AR.; brothers, Charles Pate and his wife Jackie of Minden, LA., Bobby Pate and his wife, Jeanne of Heflin, LA., Ronnie Pate and his wife Carol of Shreveport, LA. and Boyce Pate and his wife, Judy of Benton, LA.; sister, Dene Johnson of Brady, TX.; sister-in-law, June Jordan of San Angelo, TX. and Vivian Winnie of Oregon; uncles Bevie Pate of Heflin, LA. and Aubrey Pate of Gladewater, TX.; extended family, Mack and Dianne Short, Joe, Donna, Mallory and Joedy Wiggins, Steve Short, Larry and Cheryl Short and boys, Stuart, Jolisa, Aubrey and Trevor Freeman, Pat Wyatt and Jerry Allen, Alice Allen and Trisha and Mike Bassett; and many other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Stuart Freeman, Sonny Kyles, Joe Wiggins, Briley Carter, Mike Bassett, and Will Coe. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mack Short, Jerry Allen, Thomas Koonce, Travis Thomas, Steve Short, Larry Short, Earl Hartsell, Don Moore, Earvy Gene Bates, Mike Vail, and Bill Conley.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Ani Chhabra, Sammie Smith, RN, MSN, Dr. Randy Bryan, Kristy Cory, PAC, Dr. Erie Smith, Dr, Basel Kasabali, Willis Knighton North 5th floor ICU nurses, and Pafford Ambulance Crew for all their care and dedication.
