Birth: Apr. 11, 1854
Kentucky, USA
Death: Oct. 27, 1922
Washington County
Kentucky, USA

Son of Samuel Gowin and Elizabeth Tatum Gowin

Mr. S.H. Gowin, sixty eight, died at his home at East Texas on Friday afternoon, October 27, 1922, at 6 o'clock of complicated troubles of long standing. Mr.Gowin was born April 11, 1854,and spent the greater portion of his life in this county. While in early youth he joined the Beech Grove Baptist Church and remained loyal to that church until his death. In 1876 Mr. Gowin was united in marriage with Miss Jane Watkins, who preceded him to the grave eighteen years ago. About twenty years ago Mr. Gowin became totally blind, which handicap did not prevent his working, however, since he learned to make use of the sense of touch and hearing and by this means was able to continue work and recognize friends. Although he had been ill for about six years and was confined to his bed during the past thirteen weeks he gave no avoidable trouble and bore his suffering with patience and Christian fortitude. It was often said of Mr. Gowin that he was kind and patient father, a dutiful husband and a loyal neighbor, a man whom all acquaintances knew to love. Surviving Mr. Gowin are twelve children, forty six grandchildren and four sisters. Funeral services were held at the Haysville Church in Marion County Sunday afternoon and burial was in the Haysville Cemetery. Rev. Neale, pastor of the Mackville Baptist church preached the funeral services.
